Founder of Winter Emergency Care and Outdoor Emergency Care

The author of the first emergency care manual specific to the nonurban rescuer, Dr. Warren Bowman helped shepherd the Outdoor Emergency Care Program through its infancy and worked on the first four editions of the Outdoor Emergency Care textbook. OEC (originally created as WEC, or Winter Emergency Care), replaced the American Red Cross First Aid program as the standard of training for NSP patrollers.

He was a founder and president of the Wilderness Medical Society and medical director of the National Association of Search and Rescue (NASAR). A two-time recipient of the NSP Outstanding Administrative Patroller Award (1978 and 1989), Bowman also received the prestigious Minnie Dole Award (1990).
