Primary patrol: Sun Valley, Idaho

Nelson Bennett was a ski patrol pioneer. Serving as the second patrol director of Sun Valley, he became known as the "Father of the Sun Valley Ski Patrol." He established many patrol routines still used today, including daily lift inspections, ski all trails throughout the day, and a "sweep" of all trails at closing. He established top to bottom communications and trained his patrol to do lift evacuations.

Bennett also was the inventor of the "Sun Valley" Ski Patrol Rescue Toboggan, which became widely accepted and used.

He was a trainer for the 10th Mountain Division and served in Italy.

Bennett became general manager of White Pass Ski Area and was also very involved with the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association as an alpine ski team manager and Olympic and international ski race official. He was inducted into the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame in 1986.
