Holz was the co-founder of the American Birkebeiner (Birkie) Ski Patrol, which works the classic American Birkebeiner Nordic race in Wisconsin. He was the unofficial patrol representative of the Birkie Patrol from its beginning up to 2015. This event patrol includes 75 patrollers from the U.S. and Canada, and patrols the 100 kilometers of terrain the Birkie is held on. The coverage provided by the Birkie patrol gets an annual review by the FIS delegate officiating the Birkie, and the patrol has received high praise each year. The Birkie Event Patrol was recognized as the NSP Outstanding National Large Nordic Ski Patrol and was awarded a Gold Merit Star.
He later served as a patrol director, section chief, division Nordic advisor, and NSP National Nordic Program Director. He was an early founder and driving force behind the Mountain Travel and Rescue within the Central Division and through these efforts created the Central Division's winter search and rescue (SAR) methodology.
Holz received a Distinguished Service Award, the Western Region 10th Mountain Award, and a Central Division Lifetime Achievement Award.
