Charles joined NSP in 1954 and received National Appointment Number 2395 in 1961. He served as a patrol director, section chief, and region director. He also served the Far West Division as Awards advisor and during that time was a key contributor to a major revision of the Awards section of the Ski Patroller's Manual.

Charles was instrumental in webpage development for his region and the Far West Division. He also initiated several changes to the division bylaws, making regions and the division more efficient. He was an organizer, leader, and attendee of many NSP European Seminars.

Charles received several NSP awards, including a Gold Merit Star as the National Chairman's Outstanding Administrative Ski Patroller in 1990 and a Distinguished Service Award in 2011.
