The federally chartered, charitable, nonprofit National Ski Patrol, established 75 years ago, is the leading authority of winter mountain safety. The National Ski Patrol (NSP) is dedicated to serving the public and outdoor recreation industry by providing education and accreditation to emergency care and safety service providers. The organization is made up of more than 27,000 members serving over 650 patrols. Our members work on behalf of local winter snowsports areas to improve the overall experience for outdoor recreationalists.

The executive director of the National Ski Patrol will lead and administer all operational aspects of the Lakewood, Colorado, office and warehouse, including personnel issues, employee compensation, balancing the workload of the staff, and ensuring a professional work environment. The executive director will act as a snow sports industry leader as the primary face and voice of the National Ski Patrol. The executive director will report to the board of directors through the board chair.

The executive director will:
  • Work closely within the snow sports and outdoor industry as a leader and advocate for the NSP and its mission
  • Exhibit good management and interpersonal skills with the staff
  • Exhibit good conflict resolution
  • Exhibit the implementation of corporate policies and board directives in a timely and cooperative manner
  • Exhibit good analytical skills within corporate environment
  • Develop, deliver and provide quality assurance of exceptional educational programs
  • Ensure that the NSP courses remain the “gold standard” in the snow sports industry
  • Maintain an IT structure and system that is current and serves the needs of the members and the organization
  • Increase the number of NSP industry partners and sponsors
  • Ensure stability and sustainability of the organization
  • Maintain effective infrastructure of the organization, including staff and physical assets
  • Ensure proper annual registration, credentialing, and recordkeeping
  • Consistent with generally accepted accounting principles, manage the finances and maintain a balanced budget for the organization
  • Support membership recruiting and retention in traditional memberships and non-traditional memberships (Affiliate, Associate, Alumni, and Mountain Host)
  • Develop and lead creative fundraising efforts Execute initiatives and strategic directives as provided by the board of directors
  • Enhance the brand value of the NSP within the membership, industry, and public

  • Qualifications:
  • Related college degree, advanced degree preferred (e.g MBA, M.Ed, technical).
  • Tech savvy and computer literate
  • Experience and passionate about the snow sports industry.
  • Management experience in a small (15 person) dynamic environment.
  • Experience in budget management and finance
  • Understanding and experience in business operations and management, including: HR, legal, accounting, finance, and facility management
  • Ability to balance (sometimes competing) priorities Experience in a non-profit leadership and understanding of related legal issues
  • Understanding of online catalog sales operations
  • Experience in fundraising, including donations, grants and sponsorships
  • Ability to understand and lead implementation of IT systems, including database and web content
  • Experience with high quality member publications
  • Has a general familiarity with the programs of the National Ski Patrol
  • Excellent relationship management skills (employee, vendor, industry partners and sponsors)
  • Strong project management skills and ability to complete projects on time and on budget
  • Excellent communications skills (written and verbal)
